Cross border Christmas Drink Driving Campaign Launched

Inspector John Miller, PSNI, Inspector Michael Harrison, An Garda Siochana and Donegal Road Safety Officer, Brian O’Donnell launching this year’s cross border Christmas Drink Driving campaign yesterday on the N14 at Lifford/Strabane border.

An Garda Siochana and the PSNI have launched their annual cross border Christmas Drink Driving campaign. The launch was co-ordinated by Inspector Michael Harrison, An Garda Siochana and Inspector John Miller, PSNI and took place yesterday on the N14 at Lifford/Strabane border and officers from An Garda Siochana and the PSNI were in attendance.

As with previous years, this annual campaign reinforces the continued co-operation between both forces with regard to road safety on both sides of the border. Drivers can expect a significant increase on the mandatory alcohol testing checkpoints that are already conducted each month in Donegal.

Speaking at the launch Inspector Michael Harrison said: "Drivers continue to selfishly ignore all the advice that has been offered in relation to drink driving. Therefore, I wish to remind all drivers that An Garda Siochana will be increasing our focus over the festive period to ensure that anyone drinking and driving will be brought before the courts. Enforcement of the drink-driving legislation remains a major priority as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing road casualties”.

He added “No motorist should be detected drink driving. While the high profile series of Gardai and PSNI operations will continue to target drink drivers day and night throughout the coming weeks, the sad reality is that more people will be caught drink driving during this campaign. We are appealing for everyone to support our campaign and stay safe on the roads”.

The campaign is backed by the Donegal Road Safety Working Group as part of their ongoing road safety awareness programme.

Brian O’Donnell, Road Safety Officer said, "If you're going out this Christmas with friends, make the most of the festive season, but don't chance drinking and driving. Leave your car at home and don't risk your life and the lives of others. It's not a question of if you will get caught drink driving, but when.”
